Curated by Walead Beshty, Elad Lassry, Zanele Muholi, and Collier Schorr. Exhibition architecture by Philippe Rahm.
Since 2010, the LUMA Foundation has been presenting exhibitions and events at sites throughout the city of Arles in advance of the completion of the Parc des Ateliers complex of new and renovated buildings scheduled for 2018.
Following the completion of Les Forges in 2014, the opening of the first major exhibition space on the site will take place in July 2016. The Mécanique, renovated and expanded by Selldorf Architects, will host an exhibition that considers how the photographic image functions in tension with its modes of display and presentation.
Systemically Open? New Forms for Contemporary Image Production is an exhibition project intended to find a new structure for the presentation of the photographic image. Drawing on avant-garde, political and critically conscious legacies it will provide a new frame for the experience of the image as a reproduction. Four artists have been invited to function as curators, each presenting an exhibition that will be displayed in a radical architectural environment proposed by architect Philippe Rahm. The exhibition architecture responds to the environmental conditions of the new building and creates a complex context for the artists to respond to.
