Presented in tandem with the premier of his colossal sculpture Sleeping Figure at Desert X, Project Room: Matt Johnson invites visitors to explore Johnson's contemplation of global consumerism and its impact on society. Among the works on display are two of Johnson's meticulously crafted glass bottle sculptures, which pay homage to Sleeping Figure by featuring miniaturized versions of the shipping containers used to create the massive reclining form. Additionally, the exhibition highlights examples of Johnson's detailed renderings of everyday objects. These sculptures, fashioned from carefully painted carved wood, include gesturally crushed, broken down cardboard boxes and a twisting stack of National Geographic magazines. One object, a retired vessel of traded goods, and another, a pile of magazines dedicated to observing the natural world, and increasingly, humans' impact within it.
