Kristin Oppenheim is continuing to create a mirage before us with almost nothing but the sound of her own voice. In her second solo show at 303 Gallery the artist covers Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe... (where you going with that gun in your hand?)". The melancholic purr of Oppenheim's voice is accompanied by an installation of search lights which scan an otherwise unaltered gallery space. Her layered sound-work merges with spare elements of the theatrical to create an atemporal experience, relapsing into recollection, familiarity, and coincidence. With each cycle of repeated lyrics the artist creates another whorl of images in the listener/viewer's imagination which build, layer and fall into fragments, a crescendo of visual experience.

Kristin Oppenheim has a work installed at the New York Kunsthalle through June 30, 1996. The artist is also exhibiting at MAMCO Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and The Center for Contemporary Gravure in Geneva.

This will be the final show of 303 Gallery at the 89 Greene Street address. 303 will reopen in Chelsea in the late fall.
