Alicja Kwade’s ParaPosition comprises interlocking steel frames supporting two substantial boulders. The array of steel and stone draws viewers into the frame of this massive yet fragile universe where simple forms yield complex meanings. Positioned between two elements and directly beneath one of the two boulders, a bronze chair beckons contemplation on the fundamental nature of our existence. The remarkable aspect lies in the sizeable stones, which, despite their immense weight, appear to defy gravity in an almost weightless balancing act. Observational and impartial, Kwade prompts us to reflect on our relationship with the world. Balancing poetry with critical insight, Kwade challenges the systems devised to eliminate uncertainty and bring order to an otherwise understandable universe.

Alicja Kwade (born 1979 in Katowice, Poland) investigates and questions universally accepted notions of space, time, science, and philosophy by breaking down frames of perception in her work. Her practice spans sculpture, installation, video, and photography. Kwade lives and works in Berlin.
