'Shapeshifting Spaces: stretched by the desires within them' is a moving image program by Doug Aitken, Rosalia Namsai Engchuan with Surapong Pinijkhar, Ming Wong, and Lawrence Lek. This program marks the inaugural chapter of a continuous moving image series at Bangkok Kunsthalle, curated by Rosalia Namsai Engchuan.
The program begins with vernacular glimpses of a situated past. Chinatown plays itself in Sampeng (The Chinatown Montage) and resists the violent simplifications of cinematic constructs in After Chinatown. It then turns to the place from where the cinematic gaze originates, encountering brute glimmers of Wilderness on what seems to be a post-apocalyptic Californian beach before accelerating into the speculative yet plausible techno-orientalist future of Lawrence Lek’s SimBeijing in Black Cloud.
The one-hour-thirty-two minute program, running on a continuous loop, will be projected on a single screen, from Wednesday through Sunday, 14:00 to 20:00, at Bangkok Kunsthalle from January 17th to 27th February 2025.
The presentation of Sampeng is supported by the Thai Film Archive หอภาพยนตร์
