Lightscape is a futuristic fever-dream song cycle.

The warmth and complexity of the human voice is at the core of Lightscape. These mysterious choral compositions expand from the intimacy of a singular voice to a rich kaleidoscopic chorale of over 50 singers.

With Lightscape artist Doug Aitken has composed a new song cycle that blends the human voice with kinetic electronic soundscapes. The minimalist repetition of simple language echoes and abstracts.

Voices loop and disintegrate over synthetic textural arrangements and driving electronic pulses.  These songs inhabit a futuristic hallucinatory space that melds electronica with the vulnerability of the human voice.

Drawing on the legacy of minimalism the project is characterized by the repetition of simple words and phrases that evolve into abstraction.

Lightscape explores how we navigate an ever accelerating world.  The words and phrases ask the questions who are we and where are we going.  What lies ahead of us beyond the horizon?

The project started when Doug Aitken began improvisatory recording workshops with The Los Angeles Master Chorale.  Aitken collaborated with Grammy Award winning conductor and Los Angeles Master Chorale artistic director Grant Gershon to develop these compositions.

Aitken worked with producers Austin Meredith and Rodaidh McDonald to collage this sonic material into multidimensional musical arrangements.

The songs created from these recording sessions were the catalyst for Aitken’s Lightscape feature film and multiscreen video installation artwork created with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Lightscape the moving image artwork is a modern mythology propelled by music, film and architecture which chronicles the search to find one’s individuality in a world of continuous transformation.
