Doug Aitken | HOWL – North American Premiere with Live Music by Mike D

HOWL, a new film by Doug Aitken, creates a poignant examination of the lives of residents in a small desert town where the primary industry is oil drilling. The work explores life in a town at the edge of the world; it's a portrait of the past, a town built in the early 20th century, where closed storefronts and boarded-up buildings now populate a desolate main street in a landscape where life has relied on the extraction of fossil fuels.

Throughout the film, its inhabitants speak to their ideas of the future and their visions of utopia. HOWL uses the town’s landscape to explore a larger story of the natural environment and its transformation, moving from person to person to create a large tapestry that draws our attention not only to this specific industrial town, but to a wider set of issues faced by our society. Like a flowing musical composition, the film moves at high speed and creates a fever dream vision of the modern landscape.

For the North American premiere of the film, a happening will be staged featuring a collaboration between Doug Aitken and renowned musician Mike D, who will create an original musical composition performed live for the occasion.
