303 Gallery is pleased to present Stephen Shore: Early Work, a selection of works from the artist’s teenage years between 1960 – 1965, coinciding with his newly released book, “Early Work”, published by MACK. The largely unpublished works predate his series The Velvet Years, taken at Warhol’s Factory, and offer a distinct account of early 1960’s New York.
These visceral black and white photographs mark a period of rich experimentation for Shore – trying different films, developers and papers. The technical fluency he developed during these early years would help lay the foundation for Shore’s formal exploration in his later and now iconic series: Conceptual Sequences, American Surfaces and Uncommon Places.
