Alicja Kwade
For the 2018 edition of Fiac, 303 Gallery is proud to exhibit a solo presentation of new work by Alicja Kwade.
Utilizing raw materials and familiar objects in surprising ways, Kwade’s sculptures lead viewers to question their understanding of time, space and reality. Elements seem to materialize, disappear or transform, creating a confounding tableau which deceives observational logic. In Kwade’s hands, the factual, abstract concepts of physics become elegant ruminations on the malleability of human experience.
The artist’s presentation at Fiac centers on the large-scale sculpture, WeltenLinie (2018). As viewers circle the work, its components appear to morph from one material to become another, creating an experiential time-lapse. Intervals of seamless reflection punctuated by open space produce a mesmerizing effect, as natural forms of branches and stone shift into geometric, metallic counterparts. By examining inherently fluid concepts through concrete matter, Kwade attempts to reshape our conception of ourselves and the universe which surrounds us.
Alicja Kwade’s current solo exhibitions include “Trans-For-Men” at EMMA - Espoo Museum of Modern Art, through April 28, 2019; “Out of Ousia,” at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, through February 17, 2019; and “TunnelTeller,” at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich, Massachusetts, organized by The Trustees, through April 2019. Her work can also be seen in the group exhibition, “Space Shifters,” at Hayward Gallery, London, on view through January 6, 2019. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Kunsthalle Kiel; Kunsthalle Nürnberg; Kunsthalle Schirn, Frankfurt; Haus am Waldsee, Berlin, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen; Whitechapel Gallery, London; Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich; and Yuz Museum, Shanghai. Her work was included in Viva Arte Viva, the 57th International Art Exhibiiton of the Venice Biennale. In 2015-2016, Public Art Fund commissioned Against the Run, an installation in New York’s Central Park. Her works belong to several international private and public collections. Born in Katowice, Poland in 1979, she currently lives and works in Berlin.
