We are pleased to announce the third one person show of Sue Williams at 303 Gallery.
The work of Sue Williams has progressed and developed dramatically over the past ten years. Echoing themes of sexuality, gender and feminism, the psychology behind her work is played out on a much more minimal canvas, almost acting as a skeleton showing the bare bones of her subject. Her distorted figures and floating anatomy are painted with curving strokes and luscious colorful drips against a white background.
As an emerging artist in the 1980’s, her mark holds strong in history as being one of the only women painters next to her peers who were working with similar issues in their work such as Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger and Cindy Sherman. Her work has evolved from small paintings with intricate figures and fine brush work into a much larger scale without he same details magnified into lush free formed strokes.
Her work is included in the museum collections of The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Hirshhorn Museum. In addition to being widely exhibited in Europe, Williams was featured in “The American Century: Art & Culture 1900-2000” at the Whitney Museum of Art in New York, “Pop Surrealism” at The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Connecticut, as well as the Whitney Biennial exhibition in both 1995 and 1997.
