In her upcoming exhibition, Karen Sylvester paints vaguely familiar tableaux with the unsettling effect of dislocation; one gets a sense of filmic narrative, yet the characters remain anonymous, the place unnameable, the time frame undetermined. Sylvester skews proportions and blurs the line between portrait and caricature, eerily twisting humor into hysteria, and exploring intensified states of reality in which the personal becomes disconnected from the environment.
