For the 2018 edition of The Art Show, 303 Gallery presents a solo exhibition of works by Mary Heilmann, whose highly inventive approach to abstraction has made her one of the foremost painters of her generation.
Recent paintings, glazed ceramics and an arrangement of furniture made by the artist appear alongside several examples in these mediums from previous decades. By juxtaposing new works with historic ones, the exhibition becomes a storyboard, charting the evolution of her practice while allowing visitors to draw parallels across time periods. Brightly colored chairs transform the booth into a social space akin to a living room or the artist’s studio, inviting viewers to relax and spend time in Heilmann’s world.
Painting Pictures, a solo exhibition of Mary Heilmann, is currently on view at Dia: The Dan Flavin Art Institute, Bridgehampton, NY through May 28, 2018. Heilmann has received the Anonymous Was a Woman Foundation Award (2006) and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. She has had major exhibitions at Whitechapel Gallery, London, (2016); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (2015); Kunstmuseum Bonn, Bonn (2013); New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY (2008) and Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, CA (2007), among others. Her work has appeared in three Whitney Biennial exhibitions (1972, 1989, 2008) and is in many collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and Orange County Museum of Art. Mary Heilmann was born in 1940 in San Francisco, California. She currently lives and works in New York, NY and Bridgehampton, NY.
